The canal is entirely man-made, about 3 1/2 nautical miles long, and at the highest point - the cliffs on either side rise 76 metres!In ancient times, they used to drag ships across the land on a paved road!  Emporer Nero began digging the canal using 6000 Jewish slaves, but didn't even get down to the rock layer.  Completing the canal was attempted by a French company , but finally finished by the Greeks in 1893.
